What is 'bespoke' jewellery?
A bespoke commission is a piece that has been specifically and individually designed and made for you, rather than being a standard 'off the shelf' item. We help you design and make almost anything you want within reason, where technically possible.
How much does it cost?
The cost will vary for each piece we make as the labour and materials will vary depending on the design. A bespoke piece will start from a minimum of £150.
How long does it take?
You will need to allow a anything from 4 to 8 weeks to make your bespoke piece, depending on the design and our workload at the time of commission. This is from when you have agreed a design and pay a deposit to proceed.
When do I pay?
Once you are happy with the design and stones (where applicable) and wish to proceed, we ask for a 50% deposit with the remaining 50% payable on collection of the finished piece.
Is my deposit refundable if I change my mind?
The 50% deposit is non-refundable. The material and labour costs cannot be re-used as each job is unique.
Can I return or exchange a bespoke piece?
We cannot accept a bespoke piece of jewellery for return or exchange. The nature of a bespoke item means it has been designed with your size, taste and style in mind and would not necessarily be right for anyone else, in the same way a bespoke suit or dress couldn't be returned to a tailor. If you wanted to have the design changed in some way we would be happy to help with that, where technically viable. In most cases a charge would apply to cover any additional materials and labour involved in this.
Can I have something made using my own diamond / gemstone?
Yes, where possible, we are willing to re-use any existing diamonds / gemstones from your old jewellery.
If it is a new stone you have sourced elsewhere, in some cases we may only proceed with a certificate / receipt of authenticity along with proof the item is conflict-free when dealing with diamonds.
The working properties for all gemstones vary and so it is important we know exactly what they so we can treat them accordingly.
Can I have something made using my own metal?
Yes, again, where possible we are able to re-melt and use your existing jewellery.
Will my jewellery have a hallmark?
Yes. Everything we make will have a hallmark to confirm the type of metal along with our own maker's mark (CLS) from the London assay office.
What about hallmarking a piece made from mixed gold?
These items will have a hallmark to show whether it meets the minimum gold percentage for either 9ct (37.5%), 14ct (58.5%) or 18ct (75%). For example, from mixing 9ct and 18ct gold you may end up with an item that has a gold percentage of 45% and will therefore be stamped as 9ct. The assay office will test your new piece and hallmark it accordingly.
Do you offer a valuation service?
Only for bespoke jewellery items we have designed and made. There is a small set fee of £25 per item for a valuation.
How do I know you are qualified goldsmith and reputable company?
Craig completed his diploma in 1999 after a 2 year apprenticeship with the award-winning Sid Forman in South Africa. He is now an extremely experienced goldsmith and works to a very high standard in everything that he does. As the only fully qualified jeweller at Sonkai, Craig is also our setter and polisher, too. Nearly all our work is completed in-house with only a small amount being sent away for services such as hand-engraving or specialist setting where required. If your work needs to be sent off-site, we will discuss this with you.

What if I want a bespoke engagement ring but don't know what style or size I need?
This answer can really apply to any bespoke commission. Firstly, we are always happy to provide you with a loose stone (beautifully packaged) to make an eye-catching and unusual proposition tool and then, all going well, you can come back together to agree a design that is the perfect fit.
Alternatively, if you have an idea in mind of the style your partner loves, then we can do a few drawings for you to propose with (and maybe the loose stone too). We have to make a charge for our drawings if they leave the premises but this will be redeemable against the commission if you decide to go ahead.
If you are really confident and want to go ahead and have a bespoke ring made, we will happily re-size it for free if it turns out to be slightly to big or small but it cannot be exchanged.
